I will always remember and cherish my Uncle in ways many can't understand the depth of his virtue of a strength for family and his keen sense and spark of the outdoor life. This he embraced just as much.
He will be the only Uncle in my life and heart that delighted a little girl of six by riding a bicycle backwards. Perhaps as a gesture of symbolizing that though the mechanics of life goes ahead, we can always ride backwards in memories of yore.

My father was my best friend, mentor, partner, and the person I respected most.
When I was just four years old, my father would take me to work with him at my grandfather's paint store on the weekends. On special days he would take me with him to the construction sites. That’s where I first met Hugh. Hugh became the second most significant influence in my life.
Hugh and my Father were very close and completed many big construction projects together. He always ran the jobs, and my father ran the business. I learned very quickly that as much as I could learn from my father, there was just as much I could learn from Hugh.
When I was nine years old, my father had me work for Hugh at the construction jobs. And I continued to work for Hugh when I could throughout my young life. He worked me hard! I remember one summer getting sick during lunch because I made the mistake of going out the night before.
Hugh was a legend to so many people in the construction company and the taxi industry. In 1980, we closed the construction business, and the last job we did was build the taxicab facility. Hugh loved construction but agreed to become the service manager at Midland, which would late become Midtown Operating Corp.
For close to 40 years, Hugh managed the testing of cars, parts, and experimental oils for Texaco/Shell. Hugh redesigned the classic Checker Taxicab and helped Ford Motor company stretch and build the Crown Victoria, Hugh’s favorite taxi.
That was Hugh. It didn't matter what he did--he gave it his all and could do it all. Some people are book smart, some street smart, and some are great with their hands. He could rebuild a taxi, build a house or skyscraper, manage a construction crew, a mechanic shop, anything! And it didn't matter how big the challenge was. He could do it better than anyone.
Hugh didn't know the words "no or impossible" and loved a challenge. He was honest and tough but also had a huge heart and compassion for anyone he respected especially his family. He talked about his family all the time. He was so proud of them all.
The many memories of working with Hugh are unforgettable. Later in life, people would say, "Hugh worked for you and your family for a long time." I would respond, "you mean I was lucky enough to have worked for him."
And we were all lucky to know him.
Hugh leaves a legacy in the taxicab industry of many mechanics and workers that loved and respected him tremendously.
We’ll all miss him very much, but he will never be forgotten.
Our deepest condolences and with all of our love!
