I met Joe at Morris High School in the Bronx where we both taught. On Parent/Teacher nite 1988/9 I heard a guitar playing in a classroom, it was Joe. We hit it off, I was the Varsity Baseball coach & Joe coached Bowling. We became good friends and once he coached the Morris Baseball team after I took over for an opposing coach that had to leave. Once I coached The Bowling team for Joe & I was happy to win. We both loved music, sports, History. A gentle giant, he would give you the shirt off his back. He helped many times with wise counsel, big muscles, a ride home, or other kind acts.. He had a Wry sense of humor, loved to bowl, play guitar, and teach. We worked in a tough place and I always respected his skills with students. I will miss you my friend, truly. My condolences to all his family & friends. He was a most decent MAN, one of the Good Guys! He had some tough times, but he always bounced back. I feel bad I wasn't able to catch up with him in person, I will miss you bro', may you rest in Peace! God bless you..!

I first met Joe in September, 1984 at Boys and Girls High School. We have since been in touch with each other in one way or another right up to his passing. To say that he was a caring and passionate educator would be a gross understatement as he influenced and even changed the lives of countless numbers of students who were not necessarily living under the best of circumstances.
The late Congressman John Lewis talked about the necessity of causing “good trouble” and Joe certainly didn’t shy away from making the necessary waves when he felt his students were not getting a fair break in a bureaucracy that could be cold and uncaring.
I miss my friend for his intelligence and ability to maintain a vibrant but civil discussion even with those with whom he profoundly disagreed. His strong knowledge of history and contemporary events made him an engaging and welcome presence, especially at the many history institutes that we attended together.
I will never forget you Joe. You have been a wonderful friend and colleague.

pops, you were always the kindest and most thoughtful person. You cared so much about me and my brothers and always made sure we were set and had everything we needed. You loved my grandma so much and always put her above anything else. I will forever miss your guitar playing and all your crazy life stories. You are in a better place now, your finally with grandma again. Both of my angels Rest In Peace

Uncle Joe. You were always so kind & gentle. I will miss your voice and your guitar playing. I will always have memories of going to PA to visit you and you staying at nanny’s to make your commute easier during the week. I will also ALWAYS remember: NO to Hillary and NO Foxy lettuce! Now, you and my dad can create music in heaven and nanny can enjoy the music. You will be missed. XoXo
