Obituary of Earl L. McCarroll
Earl L. McCarroll, 80, of Milford, PA passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at home. For thirty years, he was a Professor of Theatre Arts at Ithaca College. Upon his 2001 retirement he was made Professor Emeritus and further honored with the Earl McCarroll Studio Theatre.
An accomplished actor and director, Earl played Chaucer in the 1980 Broadway revival of Canterbury Tales. He provided the voice of James Agee in Agee (1980), which was nominated for an Oscar as Best Documentary. For four seasons in the 1970s, he was the artistic director of the Shakespeare Theatre at Monmouth (Maine). He toured with John Raitt in Carousel and Allan Jones in The Student Prince. Earl was also a United States Army Veteran.
The son of the late Earl L. and Helen (Shannon) McCarroll, he was born on August 20, 1939 in Memphis, TN.
Earl is survived by his husband, John DiLeo. They were together 38 years, married for 11. Earl is also survived by a sister, Eileen Backus, and a brother, Mike McCarroll.
He got his bachelor’s degree in English from Duke University and his master’s in Theatre from the University of Arkansas.
Cremation was private at MacLennan Hall Crematorium.
