Obituary of Kathryn M. Krause

Kathryn M. Krause, 92, of Matamoras, Pennsylvania passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at Saint Joseph’s Place, Port Jervis, New York.

She was born on April 20, 1931, in Matamoras, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Johann and Katharina Schumacher Ast. She married Carlyle W. Krause on October 10, 1953, after which they settled in the same Matamoras neighborhood where she was born. His passing in 2015 broke a union of nearly 62 years.

Kathryn had a career as a secretary for a business in Port Jervis, New York before her children arrived and she had chosen to leave the professional world to care for her children. She worked out of her home as a bookkeeper for Carlyle’s business.

She was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where she was financial secretary of the church and was active in the Altar Guild for more than 30 years. She volunteered for various positions for the church including secretarial duties, choir, and vacation bible school. She was a typical stay at home mother who was also a wonderful cook, baker and pursued several hobbies throughout her lifetime. She volunteered her time with various activities in which her children were involved, including scouting and school activities.

Her artistic side was shown through various sewing, knitting, and crocheting projects, including many handmade and machine-made quilts.  She enjoyed painting and cross-stitching, creating many beautiful items on fabric and linen which were gifted to family members.  She created a variety of projects used to decorate the home and made donations of handmade items and baked goods to benefit the church. She especially enjoyed making numerous banners for the church for several different pastors over the years that are still used to beautify the sanctuary. She treasured spending time with her family and particularly enjoyed playing board games first with her children and then playing the same games with her grandchildren. If not doing something for her family, she could usually be found outside, “playing in the dirt” where she enjoyed raising vegetables and flowers, especially her scarlet-colored cannas and maintaining her yard to meet her standards.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Carl (Lorinda) of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania; daughter, Kathy Brink (Kurt) of Milford, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, Alaric (Sara), Euric and Honoria Krause; two great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Linka Kipper, Elsie Schmick, John, Frederick, and Frank Ast.

Her kindness will be missed by those who knew her.

Family will receive friends at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 31 West Main Street, Port Jervis, New York 12771, on Friday, November 17, 2023 from 11AM to 12PM. A Memorial service will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 12 PM at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, with Reverend Mary Button officiating.

A burial will follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Matamoras, Pennsylvania 18336.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that Memorials in Kathryn’s name be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 31 West Main Street, Port Jervis, NY 12771. The family would like to extend its deep appreciation and thanks to the staff of St. Joseph’s Place for the care provided to her since 2021 and the kindnesses extended to the family by all the staff members while she was a resident.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Stroyan Funeral Home, 405 West Harford Street, Milford, Pennsylvania 18337 (www.stroyanfuneralhome.com).
