Obituary of Michael Malmquist
It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to Michael Malmquist, who peacefully passed away at home on August 11, 2023, leaving behind a cherished legacy.
He is survived by his siblings: Valerie Panicucci and long time friend, Steve Panicucci, Eugene Malmquist and wife Monica Malmquist, and Elaine Lavanant and husband Richard Lavanant. He is also fondly remembered by nieces and nephews: Pierre Lavanant, Amy Malmquist Canter, Pierce Malmquist, Eric Panicucci, Luc Lavanant, Petra Malmquist, Peter Malmquist, Eugenia Lavanant, and Emily Malmquist. His great nephews, Flynn Canter and Pierre Lavanant, Jr., held a special place in his heart, as did his longtime friend, Suzanne Theodoropoulos, and her son, Joseph W. L. Jennino.
Born on February 5, 1956, in New York City, Michael's journey was significantly influenced by his parents, Jeremiah and Helen (Dugan) Malmquist. He is predeceased by his parents, along with his brothers, Pierce and Kris Malmquist, and his nephew, Daniel Lavanant.
A longtime resident of Pike County, Michael loved and appreciated his home. Having relocated from Astoria, NY to Dingmans Ferry, PA in 1965, and later to Matamoras, PA, he found joy in his community and in the natural beauty of his surroundings.
Known affectionately as 'Whitey' to friends and family, Michael's spirit continues to touch lives. A skilled painter and carpenter, he left an indelible mark on the world through his craft. Beyond his profession, he embraced the joys of life with open arms, finding happiness in summer swims in the Delaware, moonlit bicycle rides through Matamoras and Port Jervis, and long conversations with friends and family. He also enjoyed 'treasure hunting!'
