My Sister, my friend, my pierogi partner,
Growing up with an age difference of 5 years, our real bond as Sister’s happened when Chris & I married and started our family..We now had something in common!
Many good times shared, times at their camper, swimming in our pools. Sharing some vacation times together, Avalon, NJ even including Snowy the dog. A trip to New England among others and they all bring back fond memories..
The best was sharing Holidays, Easter tradition with the Hard boiled eggs, butter lamb, the Coconut pound cake Lamb that graced the table, when it came time to slice it no one would eat either the Head or the Butt, homemade Kielbasa and the EGG HUNT so loved by the children.
Thanksgiving bounty and the Tradition shared by Don’s parents of the Tortellini chicken soup and Ravioli’s…The Best.
Now onto Christmas Eve Wigilia, our Polish heritage tradition that we carried on when Mom Kubicki moved next door to Chris and I and said, time for a change and so Joan and I took it on. Those were the best times, we spent several hours making 3 different Pierogi’s, Potato and pot cheese, Sauerkraut, and Farmer cheese and scallions (Dad Kubicki’s creation) which quickly became a favorite as the children grew.We made minimally 200+, it was a labor of love. The tradition included of course my slightly burnt mushroom soup (Don never let me live that down) and the Holy Tradition of the Oplatek, brown bread, garlic and salt, all of which had a meaning. The evening continued with singing Polish and American Christmas Carols and ended with the most anticipated opening of the gifts.
Our final celebration was when Joan said …We are done, so we celebrated the final one with everyone in attendance at the
Royal Warsaw Restaurant in Elmwood Park, NJ . If memory serves me correct it was 2016..
These are my cherished memories and the many happy times, I will replace when the thoughts of missing my beloved sister Joan.
