Obituary of Patricia T. Engel
Patricia T. Engel, 83, of Westfall Township, PA, passed away on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, NY, surrounded by her family. The daughter of the late Edward B. and Emilie (Reese) Thompson, she was born on January 10, 1939, in Torrington, CT.
After graduating from the nursing program at Skidmore College in 1960, Pat had a long career in public health, which included working for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York and United Cerebral Palsy in New Jersey. She was also the manager of Public Health Services at Patient Care in West Orange, NJ, for a number of years. Before retiring, she worked as a consultant on various public health matters. She was respected for her compassion and strong sense of principle throughout her career.
She married Frederick W. Engel of Chatham, NJ, on September 18, 1959. She and Fred initially lived in the East Village in Manhattan. After Fred completed law school, they moved to Maplewood, NJ, as a young couple and then moved to Chatham, NJ, where they lived for 27 years. Thereafter, they lived in Mendham, NJ, for 20 years before moving to Westfall Township, where she enjoyed the serenity of the woods and her views of the Delaware River.
Pat was a voracious reader of historical non-fiction, a talented cook, and a lover of dogs. Her sense of humor, keen intellect, and strong commitment to family will be greatly missed.
Pat is survived by her husband, Fred, and their three children Katherine Engel O’Loughlin (John); Mary Bess Engel, and Fred Engel (Ruby). She is also survived by her niece Caryn Trager; her six grandchildren: Devon Moehlenkamp, Elizabeth Engel, Rose Moehlenkamp, Julia O’Loughlin, Emily Engel and Brian O’Loughlin; and her sixth Giant Schnauzer, Sasha.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Marilyn Reese O’Brien and brother, Edward Valentine Thompson.
Final Interment will take place in the future at The Fair Mount Cemetery in Chatham, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Milford, PA.
