Joe, through the years I got to know more about the man you are. A loving, devoted husband and father. You always lit up when you spoke of Karen and Will. You were so proud, love shone on your face as you smiled that Joe smile. I learned all about the many projects you were doing around the house, always something keeping you busy. A thoughtful, caring man I had the privilege to cross paths with. A big heart you had "buddy."
A smile always crossed my face when during the conversation you'd say "okay buddy." I'm still smiling as I hear you say those two little but, such endearing words. They'll always be Joe's special words whenever I hear them. Karen and I had a little laugh about that the last time I saw her. So here's to you "buddy" as you smile down upon us. Forever in our thoughts and hearts. Your "buddy" Jenny

Joe- Thanks for the memories and thanks for the laughs. Your gruff, no-nonsense exterior obscured the big soft-hearted guy with the adolescent sense of humor that you were. Among my favorite memories are the several day trips to NYC we took over the years with Karen, Will and Sam (and usually a bunch of their friends) where we would meet in some random place in the City. We usually had a loosely defined itinerary (i.e. go to the park, see a ball game, walk the High Line) that always provided space to discover something new (i.e. touching the Buddha at Columbus Circle). I remember one trip sitting on a bench with you in Central Park, watching the boys climb all over the boulders they have on the south end, just talking about life- the kind of free-flowing conversation that just comes naturally. It was nice that the boys got along so well. We probably would not have spent nearly as much time together otherwise. Skiing at Mountain Creek, road trips to Florida and Lake Placid, or just a random weekend get together up in Poconos. We equally enjoyed giving the boys a hard time, agreeing that there is a basic skillset that everyone needs to navigate this crazy world. And you had some skills: irreverance and self-sufficiency in equal measure. To you, a barrier in life was nothing more than a challenge to be conquered- and you demonstrated this time and again. Your tenacity and zest for life will be remembered. You did a great job with Karen raising Will and instilling in him important principals and values to be successful in life. You will be missed. You were the brother I never had. -Carl Grala
