Arlene Tjornhom

Obituary of Arlene Alfa Tjornhom

Arlene A. Tjornhom, 83, died on July 1,2021 in Roxbury, New Jersey. She was born on July 18,1937 in Brooklyn, New York, to Ilma and Aage Hansen. She lived in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn much of her life where she was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church. It was here that she attended Sunday School, was a choir member, a Girl Scout, a Cub Scout Den mother, a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary, a member of the Norwegian String Band, as well as a member of Trinity's Circles in which she had lifelong friends. She also enjoyed being a member of the Salvation Army in Bay Ridge later in life where she was proud to lead the group sing. It was at Trinity, at an annual Juletre Fest, that she met the love of her life and future husband Anstein Tjornhom who had recently come over from Norway to be educated in the USA.  She graduated from Bay Ridge High School in 1955 and in February of 1956 she married Anstein. They enjoyed sixty-five wonderful years of marriage. Together they had four children; a daughter Ruth Ann who died as an infant, Alan, Cindy, and Lisa.

Arlene worked with the New York Telephone Company and as a bank teller before happily working for many years as a teacher assistant at Leif Ericson Day School in Brooklyn. She gave her life focus to her growing family through the years and was so proud of her Norwegian heritage from her mother Ilma and her Danish heritage from her father Aage. She was happy to have made several trips with the family over to Norway and Denmark where she met her extended family and with whom she kept in contact through the years.

Arlene's family was blessed by her unconditional love and faithfulness. She could often be heard singing or humming her favorite hymns while going about her day. She leaves to all that knew her a wonderful example of what a life based on a strong Christian faith encompasses.

She is predeceased by her husband Anstein only four months earlier, by her daughter Ruth Ann, and by her sister Caroline Anderson. She is survived by her son Alan (and Jean) Tjornhom, daughter Cindy (and Mark) Stevens, Lisa (and Roy) Henricksen; grandchildren Kristi Hamaty, Alex Hamaty, Kristen (and Ian) Lindsay, Raymond Henricksen, Andrew Stevens, Britt (and Kyle) Reinhardt, Erik Henricksen, Karl (and Karissa) Stevens, Jonathan Tjornhom, and Kristopher Tjornhom; and great grandchildren Connor, Emma, Sophia, and Joshua.

Due to covid, a private service will be held for the family on Sunday, September 12th (Grandparents Day) at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Dingman's Ferry, Pennsylvania, but which can be viewed via Zoom to those who would like to share in celebration of this wonderful life.
