My Grandmother, Dorothy Nearing (my father’s Mother), was definitely the matriarch of our large family. A woman who has lived long enough to know her many Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren and Great Great Grandchildren. It’s mind blowing just knowing she was the center of so many lives! She was so giving, loving, a great listener, wise and had a sense of humor that brought so much joy. She strived to make others happy and that is certainly what she did. When I was younger around 12 yrs old, we were pen pals. I still have every letter she wrote to me along with the Birthday cards she sent (she didn’t forget any of her grandchildren and always enclosed a couple to three $1 bills).
A story that I will share is a time in Milford, PA when I was young along with the oldest cousins, my sister and the two Aunts and Uncle younger than me (The rat pack). Grandma sent us out with baskets to pick the wild black berries and blue berries to make some pies. Upon our return there was hardly enough berries for a pie. She asked us if we had eaten any and we all said nooooo....mind you we all had blue lips and tongues She just smiled and didn’t say a word! We felt like we pulled one over but Grandma was the wise one with a great big heart!!
I continued my relationship with Grandma when I grew up with calls to her each week. She helped me through some tough times and her laugh was infectious. She loved me unconditionally and didn’t judge me. She made me feel that it was okay for me to be myself. I will truly miss my Grandmother! I know she’s at peace now after her many years of suffering. God has welcomed her home and now she’s a beautiful Angel in heaven. Grandma I love you! You will always be in my heart. Rest easy now!
