Robert Hugh “Hughie” Shaffer, 79, went to be with the Lord on June 16, 2020, at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY after a battle with cancer. He was born on January 31, 1941 in Port Jervis, NY to Ralph W. and Elizabeth (Rider) Shaffer, Sr. A lifelong resident of Matamoras/Millrift, PA, he married Mary Metz (whom he lovingly referred to as “Pete”) on August 6, 1966; and together they loved and navigated this lifetime. A devout Christian, he was born with an entrepreneur’s spirit and was self-employed most of his lifetime. He had many hobbies such as music, photography, publishing and car races; but his passion was for nature and animals both wild and domestic. Hughie was predeceased by his parents as well as his brothers Ralph Jr. and Kenneth Richard. He is survived by his wife as well as his sister-in-law Carolyn Shaffer; nephews Paul R. Shaffer (Ingrid), Rock Hill, SC; and Peter K. Shaffer (Allison), Layton, NJ; Nieces Juliann Shaffer-Edwards (Daniel), Atlanta, GA and Dauryne Shaffer, Baltimore, MD as well as 5 great-nieces and nephews who all called him their “Unk.” His giving spirit, competitive nature and his wicked laugh and sense of humor will be missed and remembered always.
