Hermann J. Barth, Jr. of Milford PA, known as “Lefty” passed away of natural causes at the age of 90 on April 14, 2026, in his home. He was a retired Teacher and Steward for Sullivan County Community College, Loch Sheldrake, NY. Hermann was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran serving as a military police officer in Germany. During his time in Germany, he served as a personal guard at the home of the great General McAuliffe. He was a member of the Port Jervis Elks Lodge #645, as well as Port Jervis VFW Post # 161, Tri State Naval Ship # 7241, Marsch Kellogg American Legion Post #139, Milford, PA, Port Jervis Masons #625.
The son of the late Hermann and Anna (Tafel) Barth, Sr., was born May 23, 1935, in New York, NY. He was married to his first true love, the late Anne (Mikuli) Barth and second to the late Marie (Card) Barth.
He was predeceased by his brother Richard Barth.
Hermann is survived by his daughter, Laura Frank (Glenn); two sons, Paul Barth and Michael Barth (Dorothy); two stepdaughters, Kathy Henry (Lenn), their son Matthew, Marylou Hack and her son Christopher; grandchildren, Paul Barth Jr. (Siovhan), Timothy Frank (Laura), Cynthia Barth (Bobby), Joseph Barth (Autumn), Jacob Barth (Samantha) and great grandchildren, Ezra, James, Eliza, Reagan, Amelia and Joseph.
A much-loved father, stepfather, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Lefty touched people in all aspects of his life in different ways. He was known for owning the Black Bear Inn of Sparrowbush, NY as well as the DG Cafe on 20th and Steinway, and the Cozy Inn on 188th and Jamaica Ave.
He was a Elk’s member, veteran, and culinary professor but the most important titles to him were husband, father, brother, stepfather, grandpa and great grandpa. Being surrounded by family was one of his greatest joys. Lefty was truly a one-of-a-kind man. He would give his shirt off his back to anyone who needed it. He was always ready to tell a great story about something he experienced, and you could be sure you were going to get every detail the story has to offer and more. When he told these stories, he told them with such passion that you felt like you were experiencing the event as he had. Lefty was always there to be a listening ear or to help you work through a problem.
Whether it be at an important meeting, family function, or sitting on a barstool talking with friends, Lefty was well respected for his strong words and unwavering ideals. Pa, as he was lovingly called by his family, was a man of not so many words but of many lessons, ones of hard work, respecting your fellow man, and always standing up for what was right. His Legacy and impact will be felt for the years and generations to come.
Calling hours will be held at Stroyan Funeral Home, 405 West Harford St., Milford, PA on Friday, April 24, 2026, from 2 to 4PM and 6 to 9PM.
All are invited to a celebration of life at the Port Jervis Elks Lodge at 35 US-6 Port Jervis, NY 12771 from 2-5PM on Sunday April 26th. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
