Our hearts will forever be homesick for a place we can no longer visit - "Mama and Papa's."
Lily and Bob Walsh were reunited on the eve of their 68th wedding anniversary. Lily passed peacefully in her sleep in May of 2024, and Bob followed in September of 2025, surrounded by family. He had been longing to be with his beautiful bride again.
Their love story was a classic American tale. Robert, from a proud Irish family, and Lily, a first-generation Sicilian-American. When Robert joined the Navy at 18, he and Lily embarked on a lifetime of shared adventure. His service took the young couple to Washington D.C., where they welcomed their son, Robert Jr., and then across the Pacific to Hawaii. There, they spent three years in paradise and added their daughter, Patti, to the family. After returning to New Jersey and welcoming their son, Christopher, they settled for 15 years before finding the place that would become the heart of their family: a sprawling 14-acre property in Walker Valley, New York.
This home was where the greatest stories of our family unfolded. The home itself was alive, a bustling world of horses, chickens, a goat named April, and the two pet raccoons, Ralph and Alice. The pond, where Robert loved to watch the ducks, was a place of milestones. It set the scene for their daughter Patti’s engagement, and she was later married in the front yard. And at the heart of it all was the pool, the anchor of every summer, the setting for countless weekends at Mama and Papa's, filled with barbecues, laughter and love.
Their lives were rich with purpose and partnership. After a decade in the Navy, Robert's career took him from the motion picture industry as a film colorist to the roads of Upstate New York as a beloved mailman. Lily, meanwhile, was a cosmetology teacher, sharing her craft with a new generation. Driven by a shared desire to serve, they became certified EMTs together. They settled in Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania, for their final years, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, service, and unconditional love.
Their love story lives on through their children, Robert Jr. (Linda), Patricia (John), and Christopher. They were also blessed with grandchildren Christy, John Patrick, and Samantha, along with their namesake granddaughter, Lily Ann. Their family grew to include great-grandchildren Francesca and Luca.
Robert was a man of strong character. He was a true gentleman who navigated life with an open heart, devoid of resentment. He chose to embrace individuals without judgment or reservation. This acceptance was a testament to his strong Catholic faith. He was a dedicated Fourth-Degree Knight of Columbus. He enjoyed filling his home with the soaring arias of his favorite operas and the savory aromas of his homemade Italian meals. He found peace in the quiet moments of fishing and his greatest joy in the time spent with his family.
Lily lived a life of passion, a woman whose quick wit and fierce spirit were matched only by her loving and playful heart. Together with Bob, they built a beautiful life, finding their greatest joy in their family. Lily’s creative spirit shines through in everything she did. It was in the colors of the quilts she wove, the notes she brought to life on the piano, and the rhythm of her tap shoes. Her passion also fueled a love for travel, leading her to return to Hawaii every year for two decades. An eternal student of life, she continued piano lessons and even attended a roller-skating camp in her retirement, embracing every moment with vigor. She leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and fearless curiosity.
Robert and Lily’s love for one another, and their family knew no bounds, and they made every one of us feel loved and seen. While our hearts ache, we find comfort knowing they are back together again. We will miss them every day until we too are reunited.
