Charles J Denniston Obituary

Charles “Charlie” Denniston, 84 of Hawley, PA, passed away on Monday, July 21, 2025 surrounded by his loving family.

An only child, Charlie was born in Brooklyn, New York, to George “Sonny” Denniston and Lena “Tootsie” Denniston. He grew up with a love for sports, especially bowling, softball, and golf, and was a lifelong Yankees fan. One of his proudest memories was ushering in both the original and the remodeled Yankee Stadiums.

Years later, Charles married Mary Perfect, his beloved first wife, with whom he shared many joyful years raising a family grounded in love, faith, and togetherness. After her passing, Charles was blessed to open his heart once more when he met Barbara Harris, who became his cherished wife and steadfast companion. With Barbara by his side, he embraced new adventures, traveled widely, and found renewed joy and meaning in life. Their bond was one of deep affection, mutual respect, and unwavering support.

Professionally, Charlie spent 35 years working for Consolidated Edison and continued his work as a personal accountant until his final day. A true reflection of his discipline and dedication. Before moving to Pennsylvania in 1997, Charlie was deeply involved in St. Columba Church in Brooklyn, where he gave generously, for 28 years, his time and faith.

After relocating, Charlie became a beloved and active member of St. John Neumann Church, where he found a new spiritual home. He and Barbara immediately became active in everything Hemlock Farms, including the H.F. Fire & Rescue Auxiliary for which Charlie has been Treasurer for many years. Charlie loved the Fire Auxiliary and threw himself wholeheartedly into Gate Collections, Fund Raising activities, and most especially Summer Bingo! He has also served as Treasurer for The 50+ Club and the Italian-American Club. Charlie was a faithful and proud member of the Knights of Columbus and recently was honored to receive his Fourth Degree. He served the Knights faithfully for many years as Financial Secretary and until his passing as Treasurer.

Charlie also had an extreme love for travel. He and Barbara managed to squeeze in many, many wonderful trips over the years. His favorite place being Aruba, an island they have been visiting every year for the past 28 years!

Charlie was a man of quiet routine and unwavering loyalty. He never missed a game, concert, or celebration for his grandchildren. His family always came first.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Denniston, and is now survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Denniston; his sons Michael (Lucille), Kevin (Fran), and Brian (Lucy); and his stepdaughters Christine (Charlie), Michelle (Port), and Kerry. He was a proud grandfather to thirteen grandchildren—Charlie, Robert (Amanda), Brandon (Samantha), Christopher, Erica, Nicholas (Erin), Jaclyn, Dana (Joshua), Kristen, Brianna, Tabitha, Sabrina, and Jake—and great-grandfather to Robert, Beau, and Adalena.

Charlie will be remembered for his dry wit, dependable presence, and deep sense of responsibility. He lived a life rooted in consistency, humility, and love—always showing up, never seeking recognition, and leaving behind a legacy of steadfast devotion.
